Mining Culture Through Text Data: Introduction to Social Data Science
Course Details
Data science has become prominent in social sciences due to its innovative ways of addressing social systems and issues. This hands-on course investigates how data science tools can analyze concerns related to disasters, inequality, and scarcity in the Anthropocene. Students will use computational methods to extract insights from various sources and work on a social data science project. Classes involve interactive Jupyter Notebooks, with students using R/Python code for data analysis and visualization. Topics include the South African water crisis, Hurricane Katrina, California Wildfires, and Colorado River water rights. Participants will learn text data analysis tools, gain experience with Python and R, and familiarize themselves with data cleaning, record linking, and mapping packages.
Accomodation
1.Stay in a classic undergraduate residence hall.
2.Residences will have a lounge, common area, laundry facility, and computer cluster with printer.
3.You will most likely have a roommate and you may be placed on co-ed floors.
4.Eat meals with fellow students in a nearby dining commons.
